For Caron Trumbo, Vice President of Operations at VirginiaBio, collaboration is the driving force behind Virginia's growing biotechnology community. As the state trade association for Virginia's life sciences industry, VirginiaBio supports approximately 240 member organizations, from early-stage biotechnology startups to the service providers that help companies commercialize new technologies. By connecting entrepreneurs with capital, workforce resources, facilities, and industry expertise, the organization strengthens innovation across the Commonwealth while helping companies grow.


Finding Purpose Through an Unexpected Career Path

Originally planning to become a genetic counselor after studying genetics at Texas A&M University, Caron realized the profession was not the right fit after spending time shadowing counselors. She pivoted into research before relocating to California, where she immersed herself in the fast-paced startup environment by managing a co-working space and working closely with scientists and entrepreneurs. When she returned to Virginia, she joined VirginiaBio as a communications specialist and gradually evolved the role into her current leadership position, combining her scientific background with expertise in operations, advocacy, communications, and ecosystem development.


Building an Ecosystem Through Connection

VirginiaBio serves as the driving force connecting Virginia's biotechnology ecosystem, bringing together the people, funding, facilities, and partnerships needed to turn innovation into impact. Rather than relying on a single biotechnology corridor, Virginia has built five thriving regional bio hubs: Richmond-Petersburg, Northern Virginia, Roanoke, Charlottesville, and Coastal Virginia. Each region contributes unique strengths while working collaboratively across the state. Through partnerships with universities, industry leaders, startup organizations, and economic development groups, VirginiaBio ensures entrepreneurs can access the expertise they need. As Caron explained, "Most of them are looking for money, people, or space, and we're gonna help them find one or all three of those things."


Investing in Tomorrow's Workforce

Building a thriving biotechnology industry also means investing in future talent. Through GO Virginia workforce initiatives, VirginiaBio has helped place students in biotechnology internships that provide hands-on experience and often lead to full-time employment. The organization also partners with universities, community colleges, and networking events to connect students directly with employers while encouraging companies to recruit emerging talent early. By strengthening these relationships early, VirginiaBio hopes to keep graduates in the state and build a stronger workforce for the future.


Leading Long-Term Growth Through Collaboration

While VirginiaBio has made significant progress connecting organizations across the state, Caron believes the next chapter is just beginning. One of the organization's greatest strengths is fostering collaboration among regional bio hubs, universities, startups, policymakers, and industry partners. Those partnerships have secured funding for regional initiatives, laboratory infrastructure, and continued ecosystem development. Caron also sees venture capital as Virginia's greatest opportunity, emphasizing that "the big growth opportunity is for funding," while initiatives like Lab-to-Launch continue accelerating commercialization and strengthening the state's innovation ecosystem.


Why This Matters

Strong innovation ecosystems depend on more than scientific discovery. They require organizations that connect entrepreneurs with investors, researchers with industry partners, and students with meaningful career opportunities. VirginiaBio demonstrates how collaboration can strengthen commercialization, develop workforce pipelines, and create an environment where startups have the resources needed to succeed. By bringing together stakeholders from across academia, industry, government, and economic development, the organization is helping build a stronger, more connected life sciences community that supports innovation from idea to commercialization.


What to Watch

Looking ahead, Caron is especially excited about the Alliance for Building Better Medicine, which aims to strengthen domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing while expanding workforce development throughout Virginia. She believes these investments will create opportunities across biotechnology and medical devices by attracting companies, strengthening talent pipelines, and encouraging continued investment throughout the state's five regional bio hubs.

As these initiatives continue to grow, Virginia is positioning itself as a collaborative and competitive destination for life sciences innovation, creating new opportunities for entrepreneurs, researchers, and the next generation of biotechnology leaders.
